Introduction 

'The Tempest 'was regarded as one of Shakespeare's comedies, however, the presence of tragedy, comedy and a good deal of romance means that the play doesn't easily fit into any of these three genres exclusively. Of all of Shakespeare's plays, The Tempest is most often grouped with The Winter's tale, Cymbline, and Pericles, three other works that are also difficult to classify, because of their similar mix of comedy, drama and romance. ..........

Brief summary 

A ship at sea is being tossed by a furious Tempest and driven relentlessly against on island shore.The sailing master and the boatswain are on deck directing the seamen in the complicated handling of the sails , shouting through the storm. The royal passengers and other members of the court group rush anxiously on deck and exhort the crew to do their best. ..........

Meanwhile,Prospero, exiled Duke of Milan and his 15 year old daughter Miranda. ...........

Critical assessment 

The Tempest has been widely acclaimed as on of the most imaginative, most original, and most varied of Shakespeare's romantic dramas.Coleridge has said that The Tempest addresses its self entirely to the imaginative faculty. . . . ..............

Conclusion 

The Tempest is not to be seen merely as a fairy tale or a fantasy or a pastoral comedy, but that it has a subtext of realism. ..............
